Robert Barlow

Robert Barlow runs North Staffordshire Hostas with his wife Margaret from their home in the village of Endon, in North Staffordshire.

Robert has worked for over 30 years in the automotive manufacturing industry, but in the spring of 2010 turned a hobby of an amateur gardener into a small part-time business specialising in the cultivation and sale of hostas. Within five years Robert and Margaret have grown their collection of hostas to over 250 varieties. Many varieties are available for sale through plant fairs, agricultural shows attended in the West & North Midlands areas and via the internet.

Robert is a member of the British Hosta & Hermerocallis Society. During June 2014 the BHHS visited North Staffordshire Hostas to view their collection of hostas, and to attend a talk given on the subject of hostas.

Robert gives talks in the West and North Midlands areas and will happily travel up to 75 miles from his home near to Stoke-on-Trent to attend an event (150 miles round trip).

Talks are fully illustrated and can be tailored to meet you specific requirements. Between the months of April to September hosta plants are used as part of the  talk and are available to purchase during your meeting.

Robert currently presents two talks:

Hostas. The Versatile Herbaceous Perennial

The talk gives:

  • A brief history and the development of hostas.

  • The diverse range of hostas now cultivated is covered in great detail.

  • Cultivation and care of your hostas, for both plants grown in garden locations or grown in pots / containers.

  • Propagation of hostas.

  • Pest and diseases and protection of your hostas.

Well Dressing Festivals of England

As Chairman and Well Designer for the Endon Well Dressing Festival, which celebrated its 170th Anniversary during 2014, Robert also gives a detailed presentation on this subject. The talk covers the subjects of:-

  • The history of Well Dressings. Well Dressings of Derbyshire.

  • Other Well Dressing Festivals held throughout England.

  • The history of the Endon Well Dressing Festival, which was first inaugurated in 1845.

  • The techniques of dressing the well boards.

  • Other traditions associated with the Endon Well Dressing Festival.
